               Louis IX (1214-1270) reigned from 1226 until 1270.     
               At his coronation as King of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God's anointed,     
               as the father of his people and the feudal lord of the King of Peace.   
               Louis "took the cross" for a Crusade when he was 30.

            Louis was always respectful of the papacy, but defended royal interests against the popes.   
            He refused to acknowledge Pope Innocent IV's sentence against Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II.

                Every day Louis had 13 special guests from among the poor to eat with him.     
                A large number of poor were served meals near his palace.     
                During Advent and Lent all who presented themselves were given a meal.   
                King Louis often served them in person.

               King Louis IX founded hospitals, visited the sick and, like his patron Saint Francis,   
               cared for people with leprosy.     
               Louis is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order.

                Docile to the decrees of the Lateran Council (1215), according to which kings were not to tax the churches         
                  of their realm without authority from the Pope, Louis IX claimed and obtained from successive popes,           
                    in view of the Crusade, the right to levy quite heavy taxes from the clergy.

In 1244 King Louis IX and his mother Blanche of Castile visited Citeaux Abbey south of Dijon, France.

I read that. . .

Citeaux Abbey, the first monastery of the Cistercian Order, was founded by St. Robert of Molesme, Abbot, in the year of Our Lord 1098, on St. Benedict's feast day. The second abbot was St. Alberic, the third, St. Stephen Harding.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was originally a monk at Citeaux, and went to found Clairvaux abbey, and be its abbot.

                 King Louis IX dealt with princes honestly and equitably. On May 27, 1234 Louis married Margaret of Provence.

                            Much of what is known of Louis IX's life comes from Jean de Joinville's Life of Saint Louis.   
                             King Louis and Queen Margaret enjoyed riding together, reading, and listening to music.

                        King Louis IX spent enormous sums on the relics of Christ, for which he built the Sainte-Chapelle.

King Louis IX acquired relics of Christ's passion from his cousin, the Latin Emperor of Constantinople, Baldwin II,   
notably a piece of the True Cross and also the Crown of Thorns.

King Louis IX reformed the French legal process. To enforce his new legal system, Louis IX created provosts and bailiffs.
