Selby Abbey was the first monastery to be founded in the North of England after the Norman Conquest.
The Abbey was granted its charter by William the Conqueror (King William I).

A tragic loss during the suppression of the monasteries, when that great thief, adulterer and heretic Henry VIII stole all the Catholic religious properties in England to feed his worldly desires and cast all the monks out with no place to lay their head.

On May 31, 1256 Selby Abbey was bestowed with the grant of a Mitre by Pope Alexander V
and from this date was a Mitred Abbey.

In 1393 Pope Boniface IX granted an indulgence to pilgrims who contributed to the chapel of the Holy Cross in Selby Abbey.

Benedict, a monk from Auxerre in France, experienced a vision by God when he was called by St. Germain
to start a new monastery at "Selebiae". In his vision he was told the site would be marked by the presence of three swans.

Selby Abbey remained a "Mitred Abbey" until the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
