Title: Saints' Holy Quiz: Who said it?
Post by: Shin on May 04, 2011, 07:34:26 PM
I've decided to offer some multiple choice holy quizzes for fun on this thread along the lines of -- a quote, and then, guess who said it?

For example:

'Do not complain then of your poverty, my daughter, - we only complain of that which is unwelcome, and if poverty is unwelcome to you, you are no longer poor in spirit.'

A. The Holy Spirit
B. The Blessed Virgin
C. St. Augustine
D. St. Francis of Assisi
E. St. Francis de Sales

And then we wait for the correct answer.

Now, since the saints are inspired by the Holy Spirit.. If someone were to choose A. in this case, one might say it was correct, however, what we're looking for are the most direct, local answer, so to speak. So, if it's God in a vision, or from the scriptures, etc. Then that is the answer, but if the saint is the most familiar direct source, from some book, it's the saint, for the purposes of these quizzes. :D

Therefore, the answer to the above is.. . . E.! St. Francis de Sales.

Answers will be included in invisible ink sometimes, after the questions, other times, revealed only later. :D

Now, how might one guess it was St. Francis de Sales, if one had never heard the quote itself? It's still possible to guess correctly! Since it is multiple choice (it doesn't have to be), but this makes it easier, and also St. Francis de Sales is famous for his writings to his spiritual daughter 'Philothea'. Which was why I threw in St. Francis of Assisi to muddle it a bit.

Let's stick to saints for the quotes folks. Anyone can offer a quiz question!  ;D

'Heresy is from the Greek word meaning "choice". . . But we are not permitted to believe whatever we choose, nor to choose whatever someone else has believed. We have the Apostles of God as authorities, who did not. . . choose what they would believe but faithfully transmitted the teachings of Christ. So, even if an angel from heaven should preach otherwise, he shall be called anathema.'

A. St. Francis de Sales
B. St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori
C. Pope St. Pius X
D. St. Thomas Aquinas
E. St. Isidore of Seville

I didn't look and my guess is Pope St. Pius X - C.

I didn't look and my guess is Pope St. Pius X - C.

Beep. Incorrect. I'm being tough on folks in the beginning, throwing in, 'This is just the sort of thing he'd say' types of choices. Should I be so tough?  ;D

That said, I just -know- I may be tripped up eventually citing someone saying something, that someone else has said too. The saints do tend to say all the same things in substance and cite each other a good deal. For all I know he probably cited that quote himself some time. That said, the earliest source I know for it, is not him. :D

I have no clue but could it be St Thomas Aquinas?

Nope! Three more possibilities left.  ;D

Perhaps some knowledge of word origins would help here.  ;D

Well, here goes again - B. St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori?

Title: Re: Saints' Holy Quiz: Who said it?
Post by: Shin on May 06, 2011, 11:48:59 AM
I guess I will! :D

The correct answer is E. St. Isidore of Seville! :D

The clue was that it was about word origins, or etymologies, he is famous for his etymologies.  ;D

I don't know whether I'm motivated by this to make it easier or harder. But this next one will be easier!  ;D

Y'know all the saints say the same things, just in different words. Could be any one of the four. But I'll go for St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.  :D

1. St. Teresa of Jesus
2. St. Catherine of Bologna
3. St. Benedict
4. St. Augustine
5. St. John of the Cross

This one's a famous motto, and so, the one who most made it so, is the appropriate answer. :D

A. St. Poemen

Title: Re: Saints' Holy Quiz: Who said it?
Post by: Shin on May 21, 2011, 11:29:27 AM
Well, I guess you can't win them all!  :D

Martin got it! St. Camillus de Lellis! He's a great patron saint for caring for the poor. A gardener of the poor one might think, he would. His order which he founded used a red cross..

He is a patron saint of nurses.. he would hunt down poor and sick people off the streets for his hospices, if I recall correctly.. I shall have to look up his biography again..

Let's see.. now if I can just get another one which everyone gets wrong... hmm...  ;D

'Let easy admission not be given to one who newly cometh to Religious life; but, as the Apostle saith, "Try the spirits, whether they be of God" (1 Jn 4:1). If, therefore, the newcomer persevere knocking, and continue for four or five days patiently to endure both the injuries offered to him and the difficulty made about his entrance, and persist in his petition; leave to enter shall be granted him, and he shall be in the guest Hall for a few days. Afterwards he shall be in the Novitiate, where he shall meditate, and eat, and sleep.

Let a senior also be appointed for him, who is qualified to win souls, who will observe him with great care and see whether he really seeketh God, whether he is eager for the Work of God, obedience and humiliations. Let him be shown all the hard and rugged things through which we pass on to God.'

A. St. Therese the Little Flower
B. St. John Bosco
C. St. Thomas More

It sounds like part of the Benedictine Rule and their monasteries had "guesthalls" as opposed other terms used by other monastics for the guest area. St. Benedict was quite specific in his Rule, too.

I'll hazard a guess at A, St. Clare of Assisi as the others may be too early for any great novel inventions to have developed. I'm not all that sure that my logic is right but its something to go on.  :-\

D)  St. Vincent of Lerins

Though I'm not too sure what is wrong with novel inventions like the printing press and antibiotics.  Unless inventions means something else.  (Bailey, now get back in your box!)

Baily maybe the novel inventions St Vincent was talking about would have their counterparts in the worldly sense with novelties such as the square wheel or the rubber hammer.  ;D  Or, an Irish sun-lounger.  :D

“Although I know well, Margaret, that because of my past wickedness I deserve to be abandoned by God, I cannot but trust in his merciful goodness. His grace has strengthened me until now and made me content to lose goods, land, and life as well, rather than to swear against my conscience. God’s grace has given the king a gracious frame of mind toward me, so that as yet he has taken from me nothing but my liberty. In doing this His Majesty has done me such great good with respect to spiritual profit that I trust that among all the great benefits he has heaped so abundantly upon me I count my imprisonment the very greatest. I cannot, therefore, mistrust the grace of God. By the merits of his bitter passion joined to mine and far surpassing in merit for me all that I can suffer myself, his bounteous goodness shall release me from the pains of purgatory and shall increase my reward in heaven besides. I will not mistrust him, Meg, though I shall feel myself weakening and on the verge of being overcome with fear. I shall remember how Saint Peter at a blast of wind began to sink because of his lack of faith, and I shall do as he did: call upon Christ and pray to him for help. And then I trust he shall place his holy hand on me and in the stormy seas hold me up from drowning. And finally, Margaret, I know this well: that without my fault he will not let me be lost. I shall, therefore, with good hope commit myself wholly to him. And if he permits me to perish for my faults, then I shall serve as praise for his justice. But in good faith, Meg, I trust that his tender pity shall keep my poor soul safe and make me commend his mercy. And, therefore, my own good daughter, do not let you mind be troubled over anything that shall happen to me in this world. Nothing can come but what God wills. And I am very sure that whatever that be, however bad it may seem, it shall indeed be the best.”

Who is talking here?

Yes it does indeed. There are a number of clues in there for instance, he is talking to someone called Margaret later he calls her Meg and he goes on to refer to "His Majesty"; got to be English ;D

Absolutely, he did. His very final words in fact.
Shin, martin. I give it to you. You do know your saints.
I tend to forget. I hope that this little thread will help me remember Saint Thomas More.
He is another favorite of mine.

'Be careful that you do not lose anything of the Body of the Lord. If you let fall anything, you must think of it as though you cut off one of the members of your own body. Tell me, I beg you, if someone gave you kernels of gold, would you not guard them with the greatest care and diligence, intent on not losing anything? Should you not exercise even greater care and vigilance, so that not even a crumb of the Lord's Body could fall to the ground, for It is far more precious than gold or jewels?'

Who said it?
A saint who loved the Blessed Sacrament.
Will ruminate on this one. :)

St. Cyril of Jerusalem indeed. :D

Now here's another one...

'O my child, bethink you that just as the bee, having gathered heaven's dew and earth's sweetest juices from amid the flowers, carries it to her hive; so the Priest, having taken the Saviour, God's Own Son, Who came down from Heaven, the Son of Mary, Who sprang up as earth's choicest flower, from the Altar, feeds you with that Bread of Sweetness and of all delight.'

Who said it?

A. St. Augustine
B. St. Francis de Sales
C. St. Teresa of Jesus
D. St. Ambrose of Milan
E. St. Paul of the Cross

Hmmm.
Multiple Choice.
okay, okay, okay
Let's see  :-\
I have seen many Saint Augustine quotes and it just does not sound like him.
Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus? Nah, not her.
Saint Ambrose of Milan? :-\;  I don't know. Come to think of it, I do not remember ever quoting him. Maybe not.
Well, that leaves option E. St. Paul of the Cross. Shin quotes him frequently. Could it be him?
Yees, maybe. Yes, I put my penny on Saint Paul of the Cross.
I hope it is not the type of multiple choice question where if you guess incorrectly, you don't just get a zero
but marks are subtracted? ;D

So close, I nearly included a St. Paul of the Cross quote instead of this one! It was a last minute decision. I thought: "Well, who would know it was St. Paul of the Cross?" but in this case, I thought, well, the flora and fauna might be a clue.

Many saints have been quoted on the Blessed Sacrament:
St. Maximilian Kolbe; St. John Vianney, Cure d'Ars etc and both St. Augustine
and St. Francis de Sales.
Saint Augustine?? I do not think so.
Is it Saint Francis then?
If it is him, I will go back to refresh my memory about him because the flora and fauna has not rang any bells  :)

"The God who writes his thoughts in the Book of Nature is the same who writes in the Book of Scripture. And those whom He sent to expound to mankind the teachings of the latter have ever loved to illustrate its heavenly doctrine from the pages of the former"
Wow!
Just the introduction; the title and I am hooked.
Beautifully expressed; I think I am going to love this book. I hope the English of the time does not prove to be a problem.
Thanks again Shin for directing me to it. I had not known about it at all  :-[

Near enough so I accept.
I posted it on 19th May, the Memorial of Saint Theophilus of Corte.
According to my source, it means ‘friend of God’, which makes it a  great name to have.
congratulations martin.
