'Tolerantium' in the Vulgate, 'toleration' in the Rhemes, 'enduring' in the Challoner. 'Non revelatum' in the Vulgate, 'unrevealed' in the Rhemes, 'not taken away' in the Challoner.

So for a more pristine translation from the Vulgate, the original Douai Rheims Bible is the translation to choose.

At this point in time there are facsimile editions of the Douai available for download on Saints' Books. There is also a modernized spelling version for sale by a Dr. Peters.

I am thinking that it is likely in the future that more and superior editions, including Latin & English editions will be available. :D

The link contains a link to one website, which also links to the website of the person who has created an updated spelling print/electronic edition for sale. So you can purchase either the older spelling, or the contemporary spelling version of the Douai-Rheims.

These links are not vouching for the entire websites, but only provided so you can access the pages necessary to purchase the books -- though a brief and incomplete review shows no problems at the time of this posting.

When you read the Bible and the saints, the original precise words matter. The saints use certain words, that are translated a particular way in English, and have a particular meaning that is directly found in the Holy Scriptures.

The saints' used the St. Jerome Vulgate version for over a thousand years, the version cited by the Council of Trent with special authority.

Exact words matter. Here are some examples.

Emulation, for example, is a particular kind of sin, with its own definition. It is not the same thing as jealousy.

The Vulgate: Aemulationem, the Original Douay: Emulation, the Challoner: Jealousy.

Benignity is a particular virtue.

The Vulgate: Benigna, The Douai: Benign, the Challoner: Comeliness

And so on:

... When one reads the Bible, and the Latin Vulgate says 'Sacrament' -- who would not wish to read 'Sacrament' rather than 'Mystery'?

This is what one expects out of a Catholic Bible. One does not even want to consider that the Catholic language is expurgated.

Reading the original Douai, is reading the Bible in a pure sense, and a way many people have never read it before. The experience is quite different than one might be familiar with.
