Also wondering why John Hardon's pocket dictionary says: "Breviary (is) the liturgical book the Divine Office..." Then Hardon continues that "from the eleventh century" (the Church) began to combine various "hours" that were previously in separate books: "e.g. the Psalter, the Hymnary, and the Lectionary. He continues ...the Liturgy of the Hours is (now) published in four volumes... See also (separate listing) for Divine Office.
He adds (Etym. Latin breviarium, a summary, abridgment.) My 1994 Catechism isn't much more clear. I have a note that there is a 2006 revision, and I wonder if there are others later. My Divine Office (outer cover title) is in three volumes, effective 1/1/61, and is called on the first page The Hours of the Divine Office in English and Latin. I love the book, and the introduction begins "The breviary is the official prayerbook of the Church." My Liturgy of the Hours is four volumes, dated 1976, and very different, but at age 80 I wonder if it makes sense to buy these new. Would you? I think we are using different Bibles, too, and it seems very sad and the cause of substantial confusion. |
