Title: Bible Study - Qs and As Post by: odhiambo on January 19, 2015, 06:18:53 AM Keeping in mind this quote of Saint Augustine:
"The New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New", What, in the New Testament is "hidden" in the incident of the Crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites. ? I like this category! Answer: God's saving His people? Hi susanna! In effecting that spectacular miracle of the Crossing of the Red Sea, God indeed saved His chosen people the Israelites from slavery, the same way He now saves His adopted children, the Christians, from sin, through Baptism. The catechism identifies the crossing of the Red Sea as a type of baptism: CCC 1221 “But above all, the crossing of the Red Sea, literally the liberation of Israel from the slavery of Egypt, announces the liberation wrought by Baptism You freed the children of Abraham from the slavery of Pharaoh, bringing them dry-shod through the waters of the Red Sea, to be an image of the people set free in Baptism." So then the Sacrament of Baptism was hidden in that incident of the crossing of the Red Sea. Title: Re: Bible Study - Qs and As Post by: George on January 19, 2015, 01:59:45 PM I agree Odhiambo, I taught my children, that the captivity in Egypt represented our captivity to sin, and Pharaoh represented the Evil one, and every time they broke a commandment they made another mud brick for the devil's monuments.

You taught them well George. I hope that they will remember and do the same for their little ones. In our days we used to have a subject called Religious Study; not anymore though; the world has become decidedly secular :( Title: Re: Bible Study - Qs and As Post by: odhiambo on January 20, 2015, 10:02:03 AM Hi Odhiambo! So then the Sacrament of Baptism was hidden in that incident of the crossing of the Red Sea. True. That is why it was just a "type" of Baptism; symbolic only; There are others as well, such as crossing the River Jordan. Title: Re: Bible Study - Qs and As Post by: odhiambo on January 20, 2015, 10:04:35 AM The following is one of the prayers during the Easter Season. It is pertinent to this thread.
It is from the Daily Missal: Prayer O God, who by the light of the New Testament have unlocked the meaning of wonders worked in former times, so that the Red Sea prefigures the sacred font and the nation delivered from slavery foreshadows the Christian people, grant, we pray, that all nations, obtaining the privilege of Israel by merit of faith, may be reborn by partaking of your Spirit. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. |
