At his coronation as King of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God's anointed, as the father of his people and the feudal lord of the King of Peace. A large number of poor were served meals near his palace. During Advent and Lent all who presented themselves were given a meal. King Louis often served them in person. Citeaux Abbey, the first monastery of the Cistercian Order, was founded by St. Robert of Molesme, Abbot, in the year of Our Lord 1098, on St. Benedict's feast day. The second abbot was St. Alberic, the third, St. Stephen Harding. St. Bernard of Clairvaux was originally a monk at Citeaux, and went to found Clairvaux abbey, and be its abbot.
