Title: Doctor of the Church
Post by: CyrilSebastian on September 25, 2016, 07:44:37 PM
September 30th is the feast day of St. Jerome. He is listed as Priest and Doctor of the Church.
Who decides how someone is Doctor of the Church?

In the Latin Church, the four Latin Doctors "had already long been recognized" in the liturgy
when the four Great Doctors of the Easternn Church, John Chrysostom, Basil the Great,
Gregory of Nazianzus and Althansius of Alexandria were recognized in 1568 by Pope Pius V.

The Pope declares a Saint to be a Doctor of the Church for their theological contributions as a teacher of the faith and gives recognition to the sanctity of their doctrines as being sufficient for Sainthood.
