Title: Saint Gregory VII

               In 1025 Hildebrand was born in Tuscany, Italy. He went to France where he embraced the monastic state in the Abbey of Cluny.   
                 He helped to carry out the reforms of Pope Leo IX. He succeeded Leo in 1073.   
                    Hildebrand took the name of Gregory VII.

                   Gregory VII issued the Dictatus Papae in 1073.   
                     This proclaimed the supremacy of the pope and avowed the pope inherited the personal sanctity of St. Peter.

               Gregory VII was the first Pope to depose a crowned ruler, Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV.

                             Gregory founded a monastery in his house in Rome, which became the Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew.

Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV appointed Antipope Clement III to oppose Pope Gregory VII in the political power     
struggles between the Catholic Church and his empire.

Between 1058 and 1059, Hildebrand was made archdeacon of the Roman church,   
becoming the most important figure in the papal administration.

Between 1058 and 1059, Hildebrand was made archdeacon of the Roman church.   
He was the most powerful figure behind the election of Anselm of Lucca the Elder as Pope Alexander II in     
the papal election of October 1061.

After the demise of his father Gregory built six monasteries in Sicily.   
He founded a seventh in his own home in Rome, which became the Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew.
