He was a Jew of the tribe of Levi. He was born in Cyprus. His success in preaching prompted the Apostles to change his name of Joseph to that of Barnabas. He sold some land that he owned and gave the proceeds to the community. Barnabas returned to Cyprus, his birthplace, and took St Mark with him, after St Paul began his second mission with St Silas. Ss Barnabas, Mark, Silas, and Paul please pray for us.
