Title: St. Barnabas
Post by: CyrilSebastian on November 22, 2019, 09:30:14 PM
Though not one of the Twelve Apostles, St. Barnabas is considered an Apostle by the Church.
He was a Jew of the tribe of Levi. He was born in Cyprus.
His success in preaching prompted the Apostles to change his name of Joseph to that of Barnabas.

St. Barnabas was a member of the early Christian community in Jerusalem.
He sold some land that he owned and gave the proceeds to the community.

St. Barnabas is identified as the cousin of Mark the Evangelist on the basis of the term
"anepsios" used in Colossians Chapter 4, which carries the connotation of "cousin".

Today we celebrate the feast of St Barnabas, who Fr Foley reports was a Levite, originally named Joseph but renamed by the Apostles as son of encouragement.  Barnabas returned to Cyprus, his birthplace, and took St Mark with him, after St Paul began his second mission with St Silas.  Ss Barnabas, Mark, Silas, and Paul please pray for us.

Originally he was Joseph. He was successful in preaching.
However, why change his name to Barnabas? Joseph was a very respectful Biblical name.

St. Paul mentions Barnabas in First Corinthians Chapter 9 Verse 6.
