He was inducted into the Emperor's army as a twenty-year-old. The great kindness of Christians at Thebes toward the soldiers became embedded in his mind and led to his conversion after his discharge. After a period of time, while he was keeping vigil and praying for this, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said: "God's Will is for you to serve Him and reconcile the human race to God." After saying this three times, he departed from Pachomius.
