Title: If anyone adds to them or takes away from the words
Post by: CyrilSebastian on August 21, 2024, 06:57:55 PM
Revelation Chapter 22 Verses 18-19
I warn everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: if anyone
adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book,
and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic book, God
will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city described in this book.

1. Do these statements just refer to The Book of Revelation?
2. Or do they refer to the complete volume of books in the Bible?
3. Are there other references in different books in the Bible about not changing those particular books or anything in the Bible in general?

The first proto-Protestant Bible translation was Wycliffe's Bible, that appeared in the late 14th century in the vernacular Middle English.

Following the Protestant Reformation, Protestants Confessions have usually excluded the books which
Roman Catholic traditions consider to be deuterocanonical books from the biblical canon.

Deuteronomy Chapter 4 Verse 2
You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it,
that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you.

Interesting but difficult issues I think.  It seems St Luke quoted Jesus (16:17) It is easier for Heaven and earth to pass away than a letter of Law to become invalid.  But we know Jesus prophesied a new Heaven and earth, and also said all things are possible for God. And Jesus questioned some laws himself.  I'd like to find comments by highly regarded exegetes rather than try to imagine my own suggested explanation.

Deuteronomy Chapter 12
Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.
