Title: Favourite Hymns
Post by: ChristianCatholic on September 08, 2010, 09:54:18 PM
Please share lyrics of your favorite hymns:

This one is title: "Oh Man, Remember" (my translation from Vietnamese) -- it is sing at funerals and during Lent:

Refrain: Oh man! remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return!
1. Oh, the destiny of all men is like a blooming flower; one gentle breeze is enough to wilt it
2. Today you smile and laugh, tomorrow tears will be flowing; life is a passing dream, why mourn for shadows?
3. Oh! everything is vanity, deception, upside down; on thing is eternally certain - loving God.
4. Make haste to turn back to God with a happy heart; if you avoid the path of sin God will love you abundantly.
5. Who on this earth is without sin? Even the just man has moments of weakness.
6. Repent for your thousands of sins, beseech God to pour out his mercy, and silence not the sound of people praising him.

----

More translated hymns to come. Please share some of your own favorites.

I would love to share some. I love singing and singing about God is wonderful. The only problem is I forget words to songs. Not the tune, but the words. So, whatever you put down I'll enjoy, even tho' I don't add anything. :D

One of my many favorites.

Bring flowers of the rarest
Bring flowers of the fairest
From garden and woodland and hillside and dale
Our full hearts are swelling
Our glad voices telling
The praise of the loveliest flower of the vale

                   Refrain

O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the angels and queen of the May
O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the angels and queen of the May

Their Lady they name thee
Their mistress proclaim thee
O grant that thy children on earth be as true
As long as the bowers are radiant with flowers
As long as the azure shall keep its bright hue

                      Refrain

O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the angels and queen of the May
O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the angels and queen of the May

Oh silly!    Liberals like chant too.  It is the only cultural diverse thing to do..... to accept all as beautiful reflections of God.  No one is better than another anymore than a robin is more beautiful than the bald eagle (boy it must be the date coming up Saturday -- I can hear my NY accent coming back too....... silly me!)

I know what you mean. I often listen to some the more contempary spiritual music too but I just like Catholic liturgical music to be very Catholic.
As for Bald Eagles.. May be! but what about those vultures? They used to gimme the heebegeebies circling round  dying cowboys in the desert in those western movies.  :sweatdrop:

Ever seen one of those vultures up close?  They are UGLY!   Probably a dinosaur descendent!  God love them but not I, imperfect as I am!   :rotfl:

This has been such great fun in between studying with my youngest and cooking dinner!  By the way, he's got all A's!  He is finally understanding the wisdom of not cramming the night before!  I thank the Lord that former AHL hockey player who trained them last summer said the recruiters won't even look at you without good grades.  Changed everything!

REGINA coeli Maria
Quam laudat omnis anima.
Complete nos seruitio,
Remuneret donatio.

GLORIA tibi, Domine,
Qui natus es de uirgine,
Cum Patre et Sando Spiritu
In sempiterna saecula.

QUEEN in the land of starshining
Whose praises every heart doth sing,
When all our earthly praise is done,
Reward us with thy benison.

GLORY to Thee through all the earth,
Lord Jesu, for thy virgin birth,
With Father and with Spirit One
While endless ages onward run.

- Pange Lingva, Breviary Hymns of Old Uses, translated by Alan G. McDovgall

I don't know the music, but I love the words.  :D

Here's another..

EVENING

CHRISTE, lux mundi, salus et potestas,
Qui diem soils radiis adimples,
Noctem et fuluam faciehs corusco
Sidere pingis.

CERTIS ut totum motibus peractum
Temperes mundum vicibus recursus
Atque resoluas omnium labores
Sorte quietis.

ECCE, uergentem rotat hora solem,
Vesperis rursum remeantis ortum,
Hinc et astrorum chorus omnis alto
Surgit Olympo.

NOS pio cultu tibi praecinentes
Vocibus sacris modulamus hymnis,
Sensibus totis simul excitamur
Pangere laudes.

PRAESTET ut uotum, ferat ut medelam,
Donet ut nostris ueniam delictis,
Firmet ut sensum, placida quiete
Mulceat artus.

ET licet noctis subeant profunda,
Horridis mundi tenebris operta,
Mens tamen nostra fidei supernae
Splendeat ortu.

DESINANT culpae, uigilet uicissim
Noster illabens animus, nee ulla
Sensum inuoluat grauior uagantum
Spirituum turma.

EVENING

CHRIST, very Light and Might, the world's Salvation,
Filling the day with radiance of the bright sun,
Thou who dost make the dark night, and adorn it
With the starshining,

HUMBLY we pray thee, meetly order all things
That in due time we welcome light's returning,
And that thou sink in resting at the twilight
Toils of the noonday.

Lo at the day's end now the sun is setting,
Blessing the eve with pledge of resurrection,
And in high heaven choirs of stars appearing
Hallow the nightfall.

THEREFORE with holy rites we come before thee,
Now doth each voice in holy hymns proclaim thee,
Hearts with our lips in fair accord uniting
Sing to thine honour.

THAT thou mayst hear our prayer and bring us healing,
That thou mayst grant us pardon of offences,
Strengthen our hearts, and wrap in peace our bodies,
Soothing the weary.

AND though the shadows of the eve surround us,
And though the world be wrapt in fears of nightfall,
Yet shall our souls be clothed with faith, arising
Splendent from heaven.

GRANT that all sins be banished, and all weakness
Drive from our minds, that they be ever watchful,
Lest some foul spirit, lurking in the shadow
Waiteth to harm them.

COR enim nostrum uigilet sopore,
Somniet Christum Dominumque semper
Insonet psalmis, meditetur hymnis
Nodle dieque.

GLORIA summo celebret parenti,
Gloria Christo pariterque sandlo,
Praedicet trinum pia uoce nomen
Omne per aeuum.

BODIES may sleep, but hearts shall keep their vigil
Resting at peace in Christ the Lord for ever,
In light and darkness holy psalms and anthems
Chanting to Jesus.

GLORY for ever unto God the Father,
Glory to Christ and to the equal Spirit,
Whose trinal name our choirs of loving voices
Sound through the ages.

I just came across this hymn.
I love the lyrics but I do not know the hymn.
It must be wonderful to sing though.
Here it is:

Glory to Thee, O Lord,
Who by Thy mighty power
Didst manifest Thy glory forth
In Cana’s marriage hour.

Thou spakest: it was done:
Obedient to Thy word,
The water reddening into wine
Proclaimed the present Lord.

Blest were the eyes which saw
That wondrous mystery,
The great beginning of Thy works
That kindled faith in Thee.

And blessèd they who know
Thine unseen presence true,
When in the kingdom of Thy grace
Thou makest all things new.

For by Thy loving hand
Thy people still are fed;
Thine is the cup of blessing, Lord,
And Thou the heavenly bread.

O may that grace be ours,
Ever in Thee to live,
And drink of those refreshing streams,
Which Thou alone canst give.

So, led from strength to strength,
Grant us, O Lord, to see
The marriage supper of the Lamb,
Thy great epiphany.
By,
Hyde Wyndham Beadon

Immaculate Mary, your praises we sing.
You reign now in Heaven with Jesus our King.

Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

In Heaven the blessed your glory proclaim;
On earth we your children invoke your sweet name.

Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

We pray for our Mother, the Church upon earth,
And bless, Holy Mary, the land of our birth.

Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

TE splendor et virtus Patris
Te vita, Iesu, cordium,
ab ore qui pendent tuo,
laudamus inter Angelos.

TIBI mille densa milium
ducum corona militat;
sed explicat victor Crucem
Michael salutis Signifer.

DRACONIS hic dirum caput
in ima pellit tartara,
ducemque cum rebellibus
caelesti ab arce fulminat.

CONTRA ducem superbiae
sequamur hunc nos Principem,
ut detur ex Agni throno
nobis corona gloriae.

PATRI, simulque Filio,
tibique, Sancte Spiritus,
sicut fuit, sit iugiter
saeculum per omne gloria. Amen.

O Gloriosa domina,
Excelsa super sidera,
Qui te creavit provide,
Lactasti sacro ubere.
Quod Eva tristis abstulit,
Tu reddis almo germine:
Intrent ut astra flebiles,
Caeli fenestra facta es.
Tu regis alti janua,
Et porta lucis fulgida,
Vitam datam per virginem,
Gentes redemptae plaudite.
Gloria tibi Domine,
Qui natus es de virgine,
Cum Patre et sancto Spiritu,
In sempiterna saecula. Amen.

O Lady set in glory great,
Above the stars in high degree,
That gave him suck with sacred breast,
By providence that formed thee.
By thy fair blossom thou restored,
What lamentable Eve decayed:
That wailing wights might mount the stars,
The heavens' window thou art made.
The gate thou art of the high king,
The port of light that glisters clear,
Since life was given by a maid.
Let freed men show joyful cheer.
Glory be unto thee O Lord,
That born was of the virgin pure.
With the father and holy Ghost,
All ages ever to endure. Amen.
