Title: Riddles for a Sunday Afternoon
Post by: Shin on October 03, 2010, 04:00:24 PM
On a late Sunday afternoon in a mansion, there was a dead man found in the library. The people in the house called the police, the police called a professor, the professor called the people who were working in the house. The cook said he was cooking, the maid said she was cleaning up, and the butler said he was collecting the mail.

Who was the guilty one the police arrested?

The butler! There is no mail on Sundays!

Times are hard in a small rural town--business is slowing and people are moving out. It so happens that there are two horse dealerships in town. Unfortunately, there's only enough people to support one of the dealerships. So the two owners meet and decide that one of them must leave town. Since neither of them want to leave they devise a competition to see who gets to stay. It is decided that they will race their horses across town. Now they don't want to damage their horses so they change the race rule so that whoever's horse crosses the finish post LAST wins the race and gets to stay in town. So the next day they set off. Both are ambling along taking rests and getting nowhere nearer to finishing. After a few hours, a wise old man tells them to dismount and gives them some advice, after which the two sprint back to the horses, get on and gallop towards the finish line. Assuming that the race rules were not changed - what advice did the old man give them?

Swap horses to ride!

Well, I missed #1 - at least I only got it down to the butler or the professor.

The wise man told them to work together on one horse dealership. Oops - not right either. (shrug)

One-Way Street

A girl who was just learning to drive went down a one-way street in the wrong direction, but didn't break the law.
How come?

She was going in reverse!

Johnny's mother had three children. The first child was named April. The second child was named May. What was the third child's name?

Johnny!

She was walking.

Was the child a boy or a girl?

And you're both right on the first one, both walking and reverse are correct answers! :D

And... here are a few more..!

I'm giving away the answer to all of these but the last because they are too tough! If you don't want them.. read slowly!

What is the difference between a gardener and a billiard player?

One minds his peas, the other minds his cues.

What is the difference between a jeweler and a jailer?

A jeweler sells watches, a jailer watches cells.

What is the difference between a locomotive engineer and a teacher?

One minds the train, the other trains the mind.

What is the difference between a fisherman and a lazy student?

One baits his hook, the other hates his book!

What key in music makes a good army officer?

A Sharp Major.

But this last one.. A hint.. the last one isn't like the rest, it doesn't rhyme.. :) Three words, the first as short as can be..

'G' key, General

Hey, that's pretty good Brigid! :D

There's another answer but I like it!

What is the difference between a dressmaker and a farmer?

A dressmaker sews what he gathers, a farmer gathers what he sows.

Two more riddles..

What precious stone is like a gate?

My first is a human being.
My second is to walk.

My whole is an Indian fruit.

I am confused . She was both walking and driving reverse?

Haha, both are different answers, but both correct. :D

If you're going the wrong way down a one way street, it's ok if it's in reverse (briefly), and it's ok if you're not driving but walking. :D

Saint Ambrose?
I remember seeing a picture of his baptism.

there is also this story that when St. Augustine went to Milan, he noticed that the Christians there did not fast on Saturday as did those in  Rome. He consulted St. Ambrose who was then bishop of Milan. Saint Ambrose reportedly replied: "When I am at Rome, I fast on a Saturday;  when I am at Milan, I do not. Follow the custom of the Church where you are."
The comment went through some changes by others
Eventually it became "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."  ;D

Another great saint!

That saying's by the way something I heard a priest talk about in a sermon once, about different traditions and observing them where he traveled.
Saint Ambrose?

Ho ho!

Don't give up on the other half! Lemon is the first part, all you have to do is 'transpose'!

Transposing means rearranging the letters!  ;D

I hope the others will keep on trying. I happen to know the answer but not through my own efforts that is why I have not answered.

And it will.
Even as a child, I used to love riddles, puzzles, etc. I could never let go till I got the answer.
