Title: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: Shin on November 08, 2010, 05:38:59 PM Here's a gardening theme.. remember after the jokes for the riddles -- that theme..
Why do potatoes make good detectives? Because they keep their eyes peeled. What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter? Pumpkin pi. I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli. - George Bush, U.S. President, 1990 What do you call a stolen yam? A hot potato. Have you heard of the garlic diet? You don't lose much weight, but from a distance your friends think you look thinner. What do you get if you cross a four leaf clover with poison ivy? A rash of good luck. A man walks into a flower shop "I'd like some flowers please." "Certainly, Sir. What did you have in mind?" He shrugs "Well I'm not sure, I uh, I uh, I uh..." "Perhaps I could help. . . What exactly have you done?" Where did the vegetables go to have a few drinks? The Salad Bar. Everyone has these on their face? Tulips. What vegetable do you need a plumber for? A Leek. What runs but never gets tired? Water. Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: RachelKH on November 09, 2010, 11:06:52 PM we are a team! yay!
we are ready for you, shin! try your hardest! and -- is shin your real name? with how my shinsplints were hurting so, i almost couldn't like you at first. :-[ Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: Shin on November 09, 2010, 11:26:29 PM we are a team! yay! we are ready for you, shin! try your hardest! and -- is shin your real name? with how my shinsplints were hurting so, i almost couldn't like you at first. :-[ No, it's just something I picked up when I was studying Japanese and fell into the habit of using everywhere. Now, everybody just thinks of me as a pain in the shin because I always tell people about the harder things in life, so it's just about perfect! :D I have the perfectly ordinary first name of Jeffrey which my mother's good looking friend suggested to her, and she picked instead of David or Gregory. :D Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: RachelKH on November 09, 2010, 11:36:36 PM lol
my maiden name was Jeffries, and people always insisted I had a brother Jeffrey, but I only had Christian, Scott, and Daniel, and sister Nicki (Nicolette) what does 'shin' mean in japanese? is it a name or something else that you relate to? just wondering. my nephew Kevin is very good at picking up languages -- he speaks chinese very well -- he spent a month there last year -- i learned a bit of german, but no other languages, except how to sing 'head-shoulders-knees-and-toes' in japanese, although i had a korean aunt who taught us how to count to 10 in korean when we were little. Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: Shin on November 10, 2010, 11:41:36 PM All good names! :D
I used to listen to German opera but I never picked up any of it truly, you did not need to know the language to appreciate it. :D A friend of mine learned Chinese and Japanese, I was impressed with his skill with languages! Mine is poorer than I liked, I picked up less than I thought I would. I've taken courses in Latin, French, and Japanese, and done very poorly with all of them. :D I just looked it up (I forgot the meanings) and read that Shin can be written using different kanji characters and can mean: * ?, "true" * ?, "extend" * ?, "new" * ?, "heart" * ?, "belief" * ?, "progress" * ?, "humility" * ?, "advance" * ?, "gentleman" If you can read the above you can see there are many different characters for the same sounding word, but with different meanings. Japanese like Chinese is a language full of different symbols to represent words, unlike our 26 character alphabet, it has tens of thousands of characters. I just picked it up because I liked the sound of it, more than the meaning though I recall I was looking up characters that represented 'belief' and 'faith' and 'heart'. So you can see if you want to learn to write in the language it is tougher than other languages. So mostly I just studied spoken Japanese, though I made a few attempts to do more that fell largely flat. I really think that Asia and many other countries need to hear the quotes of the saints in their languages. :D I appreciate the Japanese family traditions of respect, hard work, discipline, education, etc. America had some good influence on them and some bad after we took over and reformed their government. My grandfather fought in the war against the Japanese, he was on an island in the Philippines shortly before the end. Some of the forum members like to make up haiku. :D They're all incipient poet laureates! Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: Shin on November 10, 2010, 11:43:10 PM Looks like the characters won't post. C'est la vie! :D
Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: RachelKH on November 11, 2010, 11:52:01 AM aw, i guess i can google it later -- i wonder how their computer keyboards look if they have so many characters on them :boggles:
Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: Shin on November 11, 2010, 12:31:42 PM aw, i guess i can google it later -- i wonder how their computer keyboards look if they have so many characters on them :boggles: Oh they have several other shorter alphabets so to speak, that they combine with the others, that are sound only based.. They still type out the main alphabet, but what they do is they type the sound of it first, then get a drop-down list of choices as the computer guesses what they want, and they choose from that. Had a Korean friend in school when I was a boy, he was a straight A student. Those Asian parents keep those children hard at work! Though he didn't have quite as terrible the threats behind it as he did in the old country. Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: RachelKH on November 11, 2010, 12:36:40 PM that is so interesting -- i live in the same small town i was brought up in (same church i was baptized, received 1st confession and 1st Holy Communion in, confirmed and married there too) and really don't get to see many different types of people -- even those of different heritage are 'Americanized' before they come to my town and i know so little of the world -- i find it interesting lately.
Title: Re: Gardening & Vegetable Jokes and Riddles Post by: Brigid on November 11, 2010, 04:13:36 PM Going by all the meanings of Shin, it looks like you'll get all the variety you could ever want right here! :D
