Title: New Pamphlet: St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle on Modesty & Decorum
Post by: Shin on May 07, 2012, 05:38:51 PM
This is the first part of some excerpts of the writings of St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle (http://saintsworks.net/Modesty%20and%20Purity%20-%20St.%20Jean%20Baptiste%20de%20la%20Salle%20-%20Modesty%20and%20Decorum.html) on the subject of modesty and decorum.

Hopefully a second part will appear before too long, with further extracts.

This first part covers subjects ranging from appearance, dressing, waking and sleeping, modesty of the eyes, etc.

Thank you Shin. I am looking forward to the second part. So Saint Jean Baptiste de la Salle was of the opinion that
"Women, being by nature less capable of great things than men, are also more inclined to vanity and luxury in their clothing".
I wonder how he arrived at that conclusion. :)

I think traditionally most sermons on modesty were directed towards women but has anyone noticed some of the weird fashions adopted by men lately? Some of their clothing has become very effeminate and some highstreet fashion stores now sell gender-neutral designs. These are more directed at the under 30's but I think there's a concerted effort abroad to blur all distinctions between male and female.

Some of the quotes I included one would think would not normally need to be said. I.e. the idea of men curling their hair.  ::)

I was thinking of the bad examples television provides reading some of it -- cartoons, for example. There're a number of other quotes of his that would apply towards what is taken for humor.

I agree martin.
Young men, and some not so young men over here have taken to wearing ear rings, braiding or relaxing their hair etc. Only women used to do these things. They defend it as being fashionable.  :(
