Title: The Nine Choirs of Angels
Post by: odhiambo on November 25, 2013, 05:14:41 AM
Yesterday's Second Reading, Saint Paul lists a few choirs of Angels . Two of them I am not familiar with.
The Nine Choirs which we all know are
Seraphim
Cherubim
Thrones
Dominions
Virtues
Powers
Archangels
Principalities
Angels
Colossians 1:16 mentions titles I am not familiar with.

"....thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities....."

'12. Giving thanks to God and the Father, who hath made us vworthy unto the part of the lot
of the saints in the light:
13. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the
kingdom of the son of his love,
14. In whom we have redemption, the remission of sins:
15. Who is the *image of the invisible God, the first born of all creature:
16. Because *in him were created all things in heaven, and in earth, visible, and invisible,
whether Thrones, or Dominations, or Principalities, or Potestates:

17. All by him were created: and he is before all, and all consist in him.
18. And he is the head of the body, the CHURCH, who is the beginning, first born of the
dead: that he may be in all things holding the primacy:
19. Because in him it hath well pleased, all fullness to inhabit:
20. And by him to reconcile all things unto himself, pacifying by the blood of his cross,
whether the things in earth, or the things that are in heaven.
21. And you, whereas you were sometime alienated and enemies in sense, in evil
works:
22. Yet now he hath reconciled in the body of his flesh by death, to present you holy and
immaculate, and blameless before him:'

Colossians 1:12-22

Potestates is alternatively translated as 'powers'.

Quoniam in ipso condita sunt universa in caelis, et in terra, visibilia, et invisibilia, sive throni, sive dominationes, sive principatus, sive potestates: omnia per ipsum et in ipso creata sunt:

Since a throne is also a judgment seat, these angels are especially concerned with divine judgments and ordinances.
