O my goodness, that vision of St. Elizabeth Seton rattled me. I actually once had a scary dream, a couple years ago, that the devil was on my television screen. I don't watch much - Jeopardy (you learn things), occasional mysteries, and checking the weather (I'm a weather/storm watcher.) I don't know if I can give this up completely in spite of everything, but going to work on it.

Then the Church shall be scattered, driven into the wilderness, and shall be for a time, as it was in the beginning, invisible hidden in catacombs, in dens, in mountains, in lurking places; for a time it shall be swept, as it were from the face of the earth. Such is the universal testimony of the Fathers of the early Church.' I'm so used to comfort, this will be hard! But it's worth it to me - it's the only thing to do. Brigid, I once went to a Latin Mass in a crypt beneath a basilica. Priest and server + 2 people! I felt like I was in a catacomb, but after I thought about it, I decided that if soldiers came bursting in to arrest us it would have been glorious! It was a lovely holy Mass.

Those are the sweetest Mary prayers. I have a missal from 1959. There is so much in it - about vestments, the vessels used at the altar, different masses, liturgical colors, etc. Then each day has a sentence or two from the Imitation of Christ. I sometimes just read it at home, I like it so much. How do kids today learn all these things if they don't go to a Catholic school? They have no missals anymore

Would you please pray for my sister's recovery. Her name is Alice. She almost died of a brain aneurysm last week. (She was dancing!) Your prayers appreciated. Thank you so much. Susanna

Speaking of God allowing evil to happen to us reminds me of a favorite quote from Imitation of Christ, Book 3 Ch 13: "...thou who hast so often offended God and so very many times deserved hell? But Mine eye hath spared thee, because thy soul was precious in My sight; that thou mightest know My love, and mightest always live thankful for My benefits; and that thou mightest give thyself altogether to true subjection and humility, and patiently bear the contempt which thou meritest."

Stop me if you've heard this. A man joined a very strict monastic order where he was permitted to say only 2 words a year. At the end of the 1st year, the abbot told him he could say his 2 words. He replied, "bed hard." At the end of the 2nd year, when the abbot allowed him to speak his 2 words again he said, "food lousy." At the end of the 3rd year, when the abbot told him he could speak he said, "I quit." The abbot replied: "Well, I'm not surprised, all you do is complain."
