I'm working on a book detailing exactly why we who follow Christ should avoid the media. I want to include quotes from saints, but I don't know the saints as well as many of the people here,

These are the reasons against media use, which I plan to outline in my book, backing them up with Scripture and the words of the saints:

  • Much of it teaches all kinds of heresy in all kinds of insidious ways.
  • Seeing sin subjects us to a danger similar to that of associating with bad company.
  • It leads us to an excessive focus on the unreal.
  • All worldly amusements are a waste of time that could be spent on prayer, good works, and rest.
  • Worldly knowledge is built on sand because it is not backed by divine revelation.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I'm hoping some of you have saints' quotes to back up each of the saints, or at least can point me to such resources. While the saints did not have modern media, they did have books, poems, and plays, so I'm hoping some here know which saints said what about these.

Francis J. Betten's volume, 'The Roman Index of Forbidden Books' should help too.

I'll add you to the members who can use the search function on Saints' Quotes. You can use a search function to search for key words.

Free programs like Agent Ransack, allow you to search for key terms throughout multiple text files, so to the extent you've got the Saints' Books library, those volumes that are text-based or PDF with text overlays, are searchable too.

I'll take a look later for some quotes Paul, I think you'll find plenty of them, based on avoiding 'the world', and condemning theatres, romances, etc. You should generally be able to find the page/source citations easily enough using Agent Ransack or some other free alternative, if you download the Saints' Books library and/or simply use an Internet search engine with focused searches.

The aforementioned tools should allow you to gather some good material.

Furthermore, under the protection of the Bible Societies which have long since been condemned by this Holy See, they distribute to the faithful under the pretext of religion, the holy bible in vernacular translations. Since these infringe the Church's rules, they are consequently subverted and most daringly twisted to yield a vile meaning. So you realize very well what vigilant and careful efforts you must make to inspire in your faithful people an utter horror of reading these pestilential books. "No," rejoined the Judge, "you are a Ciceronian, not a Christian." He then commanded him to be instantly scourged. The saint promised to correct his fault, and having returned from the vision he found his shoulders livid and covered with wounds in consequence of the chastisement that he had received. Thenceforward he gave up the works of Cicero, and devoted himself to the reading of books of piety. 'Never read books you aren't sure about. . . even supposing that these bad books are very well written from a literary point of view. Let me ask you this: Would you drink something you knew was poisoned just because it was offered to you in a golden cup?'

St. Vincent de Paul

[One key to the above statement for example is 'gratify curiosity' I think. Do you go away with more virtue and knowledge, or is it all experiential, inciting passions and waiting for the next turn of a plot, that ultimately leaves one empty of everything good, it was only all stimulation of the passions.]

It would be great to know what writings these quotes came from; I have read some, but many of these are from works I have not read.

Try targeted searches in search engines, and you should find many of the references I would think. Cheesy

I.e. put part of a sentence in quote, like "the crafty enemies of the Church" and some should show up. Then you could pick up the whole volume for more!

I have been debating on whether or not to keep a single TV show that I like the plot of, but it does have some problems.  This quote gives me something to think about in evalutating it.
