State of being penitent------Sorrow for sins or faults
Penance-------- An act of self-abasement, mortification or devotion performed to show sorrow or repentance for sins.

The meanings are from Merriam Webster.

So first comes penitence and then penance to compensate for the offence.

Patricia, you're our resident Fatima expert.  Cheesy Didn't Our Lady ask for penance at Fatima (and most other apparitions of Our Lady).

She did and emphasized a lot on the need for Penance.

Did I sound too secular with my previous answer?  Grin
