The Agony in the Garden

Our father….

Then Jesus came with them to a small estate called Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Stay here while I go over there to pray.”  He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him. And sadness came over Him and great distress.    ( Matt 26: 36, 37)
Hail Mary….

Then He said to them, “My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and keep awake with me.”  (Matt 26: 38)
Hail Mary….

Then He withdrew from them, about a stones throw away and knelt down and prayed. “Father,” He said, “If it is possible, take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, let Thy will not Mine be done.”  ( Luke 22: 41-43)
Hail Mary….

He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, “So you had not the strength to keep awake with Me one hour? You should be awake and praying not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” ( Matt 26: 40, 41)
Hail Mary…

Again, a second time, He went away and prayed; “My Father,” He said, “if this cup cannot pass by without my drinking it, Thy will be done!” And He came back again and found them sleeping.    (Matt 26: 42, 43)
Hail Mary…

Leaving them there, He went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.  (Matt 26: 44, 45)
Hail Mary…

Then an angel appeared to Him, coming from heaven to give Him Strength. (Luke 22: 43)
Hail Mary…

In His anguish He prayed even more earnestly, and His sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.    (Luke 22: 44)
Hail Mary…

Then He came back to the disciples and said to them, “You can sleep on now and take your rest. Now the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is close at hand.”
He was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve, appeared, and with him a large number of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.  (Matt 26: 45-48)
Hail Mary…

Then all the disciples deserted Him and ran away.  (Matt 26: 56)
Hail Mary…

Glory be to the Father...

                                      The Scourging at the Pillar

Our Father…

They had Jesus bound and took Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.   (Matt 27: 2)
Hail Mary…

At festival time it was the governors practice to release a prisoner for the people, anyone they chose. Now at that time there was a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas.  (Matt 27: 15-17)
Hail Mary…

Pilate said to them, “Which do you want me to release for you; Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” (Matt 27: 17)
But as one man they howled, “Away with him! Give us Barabbas!”  (Luke 22: 18, 19)
Hail Mary…

So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, having ordered Jesus to be scourged, handed Him over to be crucified.  (Mark 15: 15)
Hail Mary…

Like a sapling He grew up in front of us, like a root in arid ground. Without beauty, without majesty we saw Him, no looks to attract our eyes; a thing despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with suffering.  (Is 53: 2, 3)
Hail Mary…

Ploughmen have ploughed on my back, longer and longer furrows.  (Ps 129: 3)
Hail Mary…

Harshly dealt with, He bore it humbly. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter-house, like a sheep that is dumb before its shearers never opening its mouth.   (Is 53: 7)
Hail Mary…

Why are thy garments red, thy clothes as if thou hast trodden the winepress?  (Is 63: 2)
Hail Mary…

I have trodden the winepress alone. Of the men of my people not one was with me.   (Is 63: 3)
Hail Mary…

If the just man is God's son, God will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemies. Let us test him then with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof.   (Ws 2: 18, 19)
Hail Mary…

Glory be to the Father….

                                       The Crowning with Thorns

Our Father…

The soldiers led Him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and called the whole cohort together.  (Mk 15: 16, 17)
Then they stripped Him and made Him wear a scarlet cloak.  (Matt 27:  29)
Hail Mary…

And having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on His head and placed a reed in His hand.   (Matt 27: 29)
Hail Mary…

Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating Him. They blindfolded Him and questioned Him. “Play the prophet” they said. “Who hit you then?” And they continued heaping insults on Him.   (Luke 22: 63-65)
Hail Mary…

They struck His head with a reed and spat on Him; and they went down on their knees to do Him homage.   (Mk 15: 19, 20)
Hail Mary…

From the sole of the foot to the head there is not a sound spot: wounds, bruises, open sores not dressed, not bandaged, not soothed with oil.   (Is 1: 6)
Hail Mary…

Though He had done no wrong and there had been no perjury in His mouth.
Yahweh has been pleased to crush Him with suffering.   (Is 53: 9, 10)
Hail Mary…

And yet ours were the sufferings He bore, ours the sorrows He carried. But we, we thought of Him as someone punished, struck by God and brought low. Yet He was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins.   (Is 53: 4, 5)
Hail Mary…

On Him lies the punishment that brings us peace, and through His wounds we are healed. (Is 53: 5)
Hail Mary…

Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, “ Ecce homo.” (Behold the man.)”  (Jn 19: 5, 6)
Hail Mary…

As the crowds were appalled on seeing Him- so disfigured did He look that He seemed no longer human- so will the crowds be astonished at Him and kings stand speechless before Him; for they shall see something never told and witness something never heard before.  (Is 53: 14, 15)
Hail Mary…

And when they had finished making fun of Him, they took off the purple robe and dressed Him in His own clothes and led Him away to crucify Him.     (Mk 15: 20)
Hail Mary…

Glory be to the Father…

                                     The Carrying of the Cross

Our Father…

So in the end Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified.   (Jn 19: 16)
Hail Mary…

They then took charge of Jesus, and carrying His own cross He went out of the city to the place of the skull or, as it is known in Hebrew, Golgotha.   (Jn 19: 17)
Hail Mary…

As they were leading Him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made Him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.  (Luke 23: 26)
Hail Mary…

My people, what have I done to thee, how have I been a burden to thee? Answer Me.  Mi 6: 3
Hail Mary…

We had all gone astray like sheep, each taking his own way, and Yahweh burdened Him with the sins of all of us.   (Is 53: 6)
Hail Mary…

By His sufferings shall My servant justify many, taking their faults on Himself   (Is 53: 11)
Hail Mary…

Large numbers of people followed Him, and of woman too, who mourned and lamented for Him. But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather for thy selves and for thy children.   (Luke 23: 27, 28)
Hail Mary…

For the days will surely come when people will say, “Happy are those who are barren, the wombs that have never borne, the breasts that have never suckled!” Then they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” to the hills, “Cover us!” For if men use the green wood like this, what will happen when it is dry?”  (Luke 23: 29-31)
Hail Mary…

Now with Him they were also leading out two other criminals to be executed.  (Luke 23: 32)
Hail Mary…

When they had reached the place called Golgotha, that is, the place of the skull, they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall, which He tasted but refused to drink.   (Matt 27: 34)
Hail Mary…

Glory be to the Father…

                                               The Crucifixion and Death

Our Father…

There they crucified Him with two others, one on either side with Jesus in the middle.  (Jn 19: 18)
Hail Mary…

One of the criminals hanging there abused Him. “Are you not the Christ?” he said. “Save yourself and us as well.” But the other spoke up and rebuked him.- “Jesus,” he said, “remember me when you come into your kingdom.” “Indeed I promise you,” He replied, “today thou shalt be with me in paradise.”   (Luke 23: 39-43)
Hail Mary…

Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing His mother and the disciple He loved standing near her, Jesus said to His mother, “Woman, behold thy son.” Then to the disciple He said, “Behold thy mother.” And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.  (Jn 19: 25-27)
Hail Mary…

After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed, and fulfilling scripture perfectly He said, “I thirst!”  A jar full of vinegar stood there, so putting a sponge soaked in the vinegar on a hyssop stick they held it up to His mouth.   (Jn 19: 28-30)
Hail Mary…

From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why hast Thou deserted me?”   (Matt 27: 45-47)
Hail Mary…

But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up His spirit.
At that, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom;  the earth quaked; the rocks split; the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy men rose from the dead.   (Matt 27: 50-51)
Hail Mary…

Meanwhile the centurion, together with the others guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and all that was taking place, and they were terrified and said, “In truth this was a Son of God.    (Matt 27: 54)
Hail Mary…

And when all the people who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they went home beating their breasts.   (Luke 23: 48)
Hail Mary…

One of the soldiers pierced His side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.    (Jn 19: 34, 35)
Hail Mary…

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.   (Jn 15: 13)
Hail Mary…

Glory be to the Father…
