Rend your hearts and not your garments
In today's reading, the prophet Joel exhorts us to rend our hearts and not our garments and to return to the Lord our God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.
He is so right. We can rend our garments, we can fast and we can give generously to the poor. These are all very commendable pious acts. What we desperataly need, however is to take a hard, long look into our inner self; the internal conditions of our lives. Change has to come, first and foremost, from within us .
We must rend our hearts, without this, there is simply no salvation for us!
