That I may be wiser

Question:
Is it wrong, rude, etc to call some one " a bleeding heart"?
Can I say to a friend, " you are such a bleeding heart"?

Well, in America, it would depend on the person, some would be offended some wouldn't, because the term is associated with politics.
I.e. it is a catch phrase to say a 'bleeding heart liberal' that is someone who cares too much, or in an exaggerated, showy way that is not helpful at all really.
It is possible to say someone is a bleeding heart in a different way too, unassociated with politics, but, it would depend on the person and circumstances whether it would be taken so.

Thanks Shin, I am glad I ask. I thought the term might have meant a very kind person who cannot bear to see suffering, etc. It better to avoid such terms.

It started out as a reference to Catholics in politics. The bleeding heart is a reference to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which bleeds from His great love for us.

Thank you.
I would not mind at all then if someone labelled me that, his motive not withstanding, because of the connection to Our Lord.

From the Baltimore Catechism #3
Lesson 5 , we find this:
Q. 259. What other effects followed from the sin of our first parents?
A. Our nature was corrupted by the sin of our first parents, which darkened our understanding, weakened our will, and left in us a strong inclination to evil.
My question is , what of those saints who show piety from very early ages, do they not inherit the same nature that the rest of us do?

The term "bleeding heart" is a direct reference to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The term "bleeding heart liberal" is a direct appelation to those who attempted to apply the Catholic Church teachings to the political life of the United States.

Thank you for the back story on bleeding heart liberals! Very interesting.
I just thought of the flower, they are a pretty little bloom that grows on a shade loving plant.
