In medieval times, a procession composed of the clergy and laity carrying palms
moved from a chapel or shrine outside the town, where the palms were blessed, to the cathedral or main church.

Sundays were days of less liturgical discipline, but the fasting rules remained.

Beyond the daily penance, the
Triduum
was severe.
The Good Friday fast as early as sundown on Holy Thursday lasting through
the noon hour on Holy Saturday when the early Church performed the Easter vigil.
