He was a saint and bishop, a disciple of St Polycarp who in turn was a disciple of St John the evangelist.

Back to St. Irenaus, how amazing that a man who fled from the Lord, became a Bishop and saint of the church!!  Kind of like St. Peter denying Jesus.
