Here's another simple one.
What are the corporal works of mercy?
I bet folks can guess the question after this too.

To feed the hungry;
To give drink to the thirsty;
To clothe the naked;
To harbour the harbourless;
To visit the sick;
To ransom the captive;
To bury the dead.

It's interesting how the saints have exemplified these.. The Order of Our Lady of Mercy dedicated to ransoming captives from the Moslems.. a huge problem as the Moslem slaving ships would regularly visit and capture Christians to enslave in their countries..
These saints like St. Peter of Nolasco were dedicated to raising the money for the ransom of these prisoners and if need be the saints would give themselves as slaves in exchange.
Burying the dead sounds odd nowadays doesn't it? But it still does cost a bit of money today.. and I think the heroism involved in it is exemplified especially during the times of the plague. I can only imagine a poor family, unable to afford or find anyone to help them upon the passing of a relative..
I wonder how helping with burying the dead is practiced today properly.. and the core spiritual motivations behind it..

Isn't helping in any way for a funeral at least partially fulfilling this obligation? I sing in the resurrection choir when I can and my mother contributes food for the dinners afterward My children have served at the altar for funerals.

I agree, helping with the funeral in some way came to mind. Contributing food, being a pallbearer, etc. too.

Wow, I'm learning a lot here! I didn't know about the ransom part and how one can help in a funeral , as Rachel has.

Praying for the living and the dead.
Admonishing the sinner.
Instructing the ignorant.
There's three for starters. Get the team over here.
Oh yea! I have one of my own to add. Eating my daughters stew.

The Spiritual Works of Mercy:
1. To instruct the ignorant
2. To counsel the doubtful
3. To admonish the sinners
4. To bear wrongs patiently
5. To forgive offenses willingly
6. To comfort the afflicted
7. To pray for the living and the dead
No one else was answering, so I did.

Good timing.
'To pray for the living and the dead'.
'To admonish sinners.'
They're all beautiful.

Perhaps some folks can try to find all the missing pieces in the 'Holy Water' thread while we wait for the next question.
