Further information about Prudence:

Prudence is called 'the father of all virtues' -- "the cause, measure and form of all virtues."

Prudence is called the 'form' and so you see how essential it is, in every virtue we practice to also have prudence in regards to its practice..

Cardinal virtues are named for the Latin 'cardo' which means 'hinge'. They are the virtues other virtues hinge upon, or depend upon.

Integral Parts of Prudence

"Integral parts" of virtues, in Scholastic philosophy, are the elements that must be present for any complete or perfect act of the virtue. The following are the eight integral parts of prudence:

    * Memoria -- Accurate memory; that is, memory of the past that is true to reality.
    * Intelligentia -- Understanding. Understanding of first principles, understanding of the present.
    * Docilitas --  Docility. The kind of open-mindedness that recognizes the true variety of things and situations to be experienced, and does not cage itself in any presumption of deceptive knowledge and the ability to make use of the experience and authority of others to make prudent decisions. So that those who lack experience may accept the counsel and advice of those who have experience.
    * Solertia -- Sagacity, so that one may act rightly in urgent cases when time or circumstances do not permit delay.
    * Ratio -- Discursive reasoning, reasoning power. To research and compare alternative possibilities, so that when time permits, one may act after the required consideration and reflection.
    * Providentia -- Foresight -- the capacity to estimate whether a particular action will lead to the realization of our goal. So that one may judge the immediate means in view of the end or goal being sought.
    * Circumspection -- the ability to take all relevant circumstances into account.
    * Caution -- or precaution. So that one will take into consideration the possible obstacles from without, or one's own weakness or incapacity in view of a given action. Mitigation of risks.

And it makes for some thought and contemplation -- thinking about how a virtue is perfectly practiced.

As we learn how each virtue is perfectly practiced.. well.. I think it's easy to imagine how beneficial it is.

To become truly graceful and good and pleasing to God.

Would that be St Hippolytus the martyre?

BTW Shin, those explanations on the virtues are so helpful in understanding what each one achieves and especially how together one can make the other work to its proper end.

Yes, Martin you have it!

St. Hippolytus the martyr, who quarrelled with the Popes of that time, but later was reconciled with Pope Pontian when both were exiled to Sardinia.

Learning about the virtues will be a great help to sanctity!
