A few days ago I was browsing in the bookshop. I picked up a book entitled: “Your Word Is My Path” Daily Meditations. My eyes caught a quoted conversation between Saint John Chrysostom and Emperor Arcadius.
The following is what I read. The author in his turn quoted from Anthony P Castle, The Book of Quotes and Anecdotes. Ch 20, p.338.
“Saint John Chysostome, summoned before the Roman Emperor Arcadius and threatened with banishment, is said to have replied;
“You cannot banish me for the world is my Father’s house”
“Then I will slay you,” exclaimed the Emperor wrathfully.
“No, but you cannot, for my life is hidden with Christ in God”
“Your treasures shall be confiscated!” was the grim reply.
“That Sir, cannot be! My treasures are in heaven as my heart is there.”
“But I will drive you from men and you shall have no friends left.”
“That you cannot do either Sir, for I have a Friend in heaven, who has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”
I closed the book, went happily to pay for it at the cashier satisfied with my find

Meekness, the greatest of virtues, is reckoned among the beatitudes. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the land."
For that blessed land, the heavenly Jerusalem, is not the spoil of warriors who have conquered, but the hoped for inheritance of the meek, who patiently endure the evils of this life.
St. Basil

Is the difference between meekness and humility that of accepting suffering then?

That's thought provoking..
I am going to have to learn more about meekness. . .
Ah, how interesting.. In the Summa it says, "It would seem that neither clemency nor meekness is a virtue. For no virtue is opposed to another virtue. Yet both of these are apparently opposed to severity, which is a virtue. Therefore neither clemency nor meekness is a virtue."
And then later, "Meekness is not directly opposed to severity; for meekness is about anger. On the other hand, severity regards the external infliction of punishment, so that accordingly it would seem rather to be opposed to clemency, which also regards external punishing, as stated above (Article 1). Yet they are not really opposed to one another, since they are both according to right reason. For severity is inflexible in the infliction of punishment when right reason requires it; while clemency mitigates punishment also according to right reason, when and where this is requisite. Wherefore they are not opposed to one another as they are not about the same thing."

I'll be interested in what you (or anyone) say. The Summa is just too complicated for me. I know he's not meaning to be, but ....... I get it, but don't really get it if you know what I mean.
