'The true preparation for prayer consists in the exercise of mortification; for he who wishes to give himself up to prayer without mortification, is like a bird wishing to fly before it is fledged.'

'If it be the duty of a Christian to pray to God before meals, he is not less bound to thank him after having made use of the gifts which came from his bountiful hand. It is, therefore, necessary to make, after every meal, a short but fervent act of thanksgiving.'

My son, if you have sinned, do so no more,
and for your past sins pray to be forgiven.
Flee from sin as from a serpent
that will bite you if you go near it;
It's teeth are like lion's teeth,
destroying the soul's of men.
Sirach 21:1-2
Be sober and vigilant.
Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, steadfast in faith,
knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world
undergo the same sufferings.
I Peter 5:8-9

What is " the exercise of the presence of God,"?
Hmm.. I think it likely a constant loving awareness of God's presence and will. . . I wonder what more St. Vincent has to say about it..

'
I shall destroy the wise out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau. [Ob 1.8]
Behold flesh and blood: Edom means ‘bloody’, and Esau is ‘heap of stones’. The whole wisdom and prudence of this world is to nourish the flesh, and make a heap of stones (money) with which they will be stoned in the day of judgement.'
