Saints' Holy Quiz: Who said it?
«
on:

I've decided to offer some multiple choice holy quizzes for fun on this thread along the lines of -- a quote, and then, guess who said it?
For example:
'Do not complain then of your poverty, my daughter, - we only complain of that which is unwelcome, and if poverty is unwelcome to you, you are no longer poor in spirit.'
A. The Holy Spirit
B. The Blessed Virgin
C. St. Augustine
D. St. Francis of Assisi
E. St. Francis de Sales
And then we wait for the correct answer.
Now, since the saints are inspired by the Holy Spirit.. If someone were to choose A. in this case, one might say it was correct, however, what we're looking for are the most direct, local answer, so to speak. So, if it's God in a vision, or from the scriptures, etc. Then that is the answer, but if the saint is the most familiar direct source, from some book, it's the saint, for the purposes of these quizzes.
Therefore, the answer to the above is.. . . E.! St. Francis de Sales.
Answers will be included in invisible ink sometimes, after the questions, other times, revealed only later.
Now, how might one guess it was St. Francis de Sales, if one had never heard the quote itself? It's still possible to guess correctly! Since it is multiple choice (it doesn't have to be), but this makes it easier, and also St. Francis de Sales is famous for his writings to his spiritual daughter 'Philothea'. Which was why I threw in St. Francis of Assisi to muddle it a bit.
Let's stick to saints for the quotes folks. Anyone can offer a quiz question!

'Heresy is from the Greek word meaning "choice". . . But we are not permitted to believe whatever we choose, nor to choose whatever someone else has believed. We have the Apostles of God as authorities, who did not. . . choose what they would believe but faithfully transmitted the teachings of Christ. So, even if an angel from heaven should preach otherwise, he shall be called anathema.'
A. St. Francis de Sales
B. St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori
C. Pope St. Pius X
D. St. Thomas Aquinas
E. St. Isidore of Seville

Beep. Incorrect. I'm being tough on folks in the beginning, throwing in, 'This is just the sort of thing he'd say' types of choices. Should I be so tough?

That said, I just -know- I may be tripped up eventually citing someone saying something, that someone else has said too. The saints do tend to say all the same things in substance and cite each other a good deal. For all I know he probably cited that quote himself some time. That said, the earliest source I know for it, is not him.

Nope! Three more possibilities left.
Perhaps some knowledge of word origins would help here.

I think I'll be equally amused with whatever letter is chosen next.
