I wonder if it was what Martin thought.

'Let easy admission not be given to one who newly cometh to Religious life; but, as the Apostle saith, "Try the spirits, whether they be of God" (1 Jn 4:1). If, therefore, the newcomer persevere knocking, and continue for four or five days patiently to endure both the injuries offered to him and the difficulty made about his entrance, and persist in his petition; leave to enter shall be granted him, and he shall be in the guest Hall for a few days. Afterwards he shall be in the Novitiate, where he shall meditate, and eat, and sleep.
Let a senior also be appointed for him, who is qualified to win souls, who will observe him with great care and see whether he really seeketh God, whether he is eager for the Work of God, obedience and humiliations. Let him be shown all the hard and rugged things through which we pass on to God.'
A. St. Therese the Little Flower
B. St. John Bosco
C. St. Thomas More
D. St. Jean Marie Baptiste Vianney
E. St. Benedict

It sounds like part of the Benedictine Rule and their monasteries had "guesthalls" as opposed other terms used by other monastics for the guest area. St. Benedict was quite specific in his Rule, too.

If not St. Benedict it may be St Thomas More.

I'm going with St. Benedict too.
I'm also answering for James.

The correct answer is. . ..
E. St. Benedict!
It's from his 'Rule'!
I quite like the 'all the hard and rugged things through which we pass on to God.' bit.
