It’s been a while…but we’ve finished Genesis  Wink

Like I said when I started this book study… I’m not in a hurry reading the bible this time  Grin

And now, it’s Exodus  Grin

It feels strange to read how short the story of Moses' childhood is. I think I got influenced by the movie “The 10 Commandments”, it being such a long movie and other movies which depicted the story of Moses.

The only sign I remember Moses doing in front of pharaoh is Moses turning his shepherd stick into a snake. I didn't remember the part where God also made his hand touched by leprosy.

Exodus 4:24-26. And, oh! Moses was not circumcised! Remember, that according to the tradition of Abraham, his descendants are to be circumcised. Then it would mean that Moses was left to wade in the river Nile in a reed basket before his 8th day. Isn’t it that on the 8th day the child will be dedicated to God and circumcised? Well, I guess I’m getting ahead of myself since this will be mentioned in Leviticus, I think.  I mean the 8th day law for dedication.

(CCB) Ex. 4:25. But Zipporah took a flint stone and cut her son's foreskin and, with it, she touched the feet of Moses saying "You are now my husband by blood!"

(JB) Ex. 4:25. At once Zipporah, taking up a flint, cut off her son's foreskin and with it she touched the genitals of Moses. "Truly, you are a bridegroom of blood to me!" she said.

(NIV) Ex. 4:25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son's foreskin and touched Moses' feet with it. "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me," she said.

Isn't it fascinating how one chapter could be said/written differently? The advantage of being Catholic is that I don't have to interpret this by myself. The Church interprets it for us. CCB and JB which are Catholic bibles both have similar commentaries.

In addition, JB used the word "genitals", but in its commentaries, it says "Lit. 'the feet'"

Now, in this instance, there seems to be a relationship to the argument of Paul that not all who wants to be Christians “have to be circumcised" like the Jews.

St. Augustine wrote some no doubt interesting and informative commentary on Exodus, but I don't know where to find it!

The original Douai has a note:

"I had lost thee my spouse except I had redeemed thee with the blood of my child. And the Angel let Moyses go. St. Aug. q. 11. in Exod. Juxta 70."

Hi pebbles.
The Bible says that Moses was hidden by his mother for three months and when she realised she could no longer continue to do so without risking discovery, she devised the strategy to save him that worked so well.
It is therefore very likely that Moses was indeed circumcised. My understanding is that Moses had neglected to circumcise one of his own sons and that was why the Lord was angry with him.
Here is a quote of the relevant chapter and verse.

"And she conceived, and bore a son and seeing him a goodly child, hid him three months.'
Exodus 2: 2
