Saint Laszlo was the son of King Bela I of Hungary.
He was elected King of Hungary by the nobles in 1077. He reigned until 1095.
He encouraged Christian missionaries and built many churches.
Saint Laszlo is the patron saint of architecture.

Are the Catholics in Hungary considered of the West or of the East?
St. Laszlo, King and Confessor, pray for us!

I looked him up.
He is also called Ladislas; Lancelot.
Said to have supported Pope Saint Gregory VII in the
Investiture struggle with Emperor Henry IV and the Holy Roman Empire.

Laszlo I canonized the first Hungarian saints, including his relatives, Saint Istvan I and Duke Emeric, in 1085.

Laszlo's brother Geza I died on April 25, 1077. Since Geza's sons, Coloman and Almos, were minors,
his supporters proclaimed Laszlo king instead.

How could King Laszlo I canonize his own relatives King Istvan I of Hungary and Duke Emeric of Hungary?

According to McBrien's Lives of Popes, the first Saint formally canonized by a Pope was St Ulric of Augsburg in 993, by Pope John XV. Most of my Saint history notes are at home (and I'm at camp), but it's my impression that early Saints were all Christians, then martyrs began to be recognized by Bishops and elders, and saints were frequently recognized by public acclaim. I pray others will comment further on subsequent, related Papal Decretals.

I cannot figure out how King Laszlo I could canonize his relatives because he was not the Pope. He was not even a cardinal, a bishop, or a priest.

King Laszlo I imprisoned former King Solomon of Hungary.
He set Solomon free during the canonization ceremony of the Hungarian saints.
