The abbeys of St. Stephen and Holy Trinity were created in response to the papal recognition of
King William I of England and Matilda of Flanders' marriage in 1059.

The Abbey of St. Stephen was in Caen, Normandy.
The Abbey of Saint Etienne (Saint Stephen) was also known as Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey).
The Abbey of the Holy Trinity was in Caen, Normandy.

William I and Matilda's son, King William II of England, granted the abbey the manor of
Horstead, in Norfolk, where the Horstead Abbey was established by the order.
