                          When I was in Catholic grade school, a May Crowning was held yearly.     
                          Is a May Crowning a religious requirement in the Roman Catholic Church?

No it is not a requirement. But it is a very good custom.

The Church dedicates each month of the year ( and each day of the week) to a special devotion. May is traditionally dedicated to Our Lady, The Blessed Virgin Mary. That is why special devotions, to her are done in May.

If it were held in June wouldn't it be called the June Crowning?

I think Catholics never need an excuse to march around with a statue of Our Lady wreathed in flowers. Cheesy

During the Holy Mass on May Crowning day,     
a wreath of flowers is placed on the statue of Mary.   
The act of crowning is rooted in the view of Mary as the Queen of Heaven.

Some churches opt for the celebrating of May Crowning on Mother's Day.   
Others do it as soon as the month of May begins.

Hail Holy Queen and Immaculate Mary (Ave Maria) can be sung at a May Crowning.

Silk flowers could be used in making the crown for the May Crowning.   
Children could make a paper flower crown.
