Maui County, Hawaii, GMO Moratorium

In Maui, Hawaii, despite a near $8 million campaign against the measure, voters approved a temporary moratorium on the use of GMO crops until studies conclusively prove they are safe.

Maui is a major producer of sugarcane, coffee, pineapples, and many other crops.

Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences plan to sue to overturn or minimize the effect of the moratorium, which heavily fines violators.
