Very Reverend Theodore Zaremba, in his book Mercy is Forever, wrote:
God did not all of a sudden become Merciful; He always is Merciful. His Mercy
was and is being continually manifested to mankind in and through all his operations.

I like these statements about the mercy of the Lord. The Psalms say that God
is slow to anger and quick to forgive the sins of all who call upon his mercy.

You expired,
Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls,
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.
O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,
 envelop the whole world
and empty Yourself out upon us.

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion, inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary,
that never was it known,
that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help, or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
though burdened by my sins,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To you I come, before you I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions, but in your mercy,
hear and answer me.
Amen.

St. Augustine says that our Lord's goodness and mercy are His greatest attributes.  Anybody can easily exact strict justice from another who has done some wrongdoing, but for a person to forgive and be merciful to another is for that person to be very much like God.  In this life our Lord Jesus Christ is our Saviour and is most merciful; in the next life He will come as Judge, exacting the very strictest justice from us; however, God never loses His great and perfect attributes of goodness and mercy, and we know this not only because his attributes are immutable and perfect, but because we know that even in the next life He does not allow the devil to torment any person more than they deserve or in ways that they do not deserve.  God bless you!

Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you (Matth. 6:33).

Mercy is a characteristic of the One True God.
