John Berchmans requested that after ordination as a priest he could become a chaplain in the army, hoping to become martyred in the battlefield.

Saint John Berchman's spiritual model was his fellow Jesuit Aloysius Gonzaga.
He was influenced by the example of the English Jesuit martyrs.

John's father, John Charles Berchmans told his son that he would end all financial support
if John continued with his plan to join the Society of Jesus.
