The Jesse Tree began in the Middle Ages with the use of stained glass windows.
The windows were used as a way to teach the story of the Bible and trace the history to the birth of Jesus.

In the seventh century, Advent was celebrated in Spain with five Sundays.
The Gelasian Sacramentary also gives liturgical propers for the "five Sundays of Advent".

The actual season of Advent can last anywhere from 22 to 28 days.

An Advent calendar is a very special calendar to help people countdown to
December 25: The celebration of the birth of Jesus.
The Advent calendar tradition supposedly dates back to the 1850s.

The homilies of Pope Gregory I in the late sixth century showed four weeks to the liturgical season
of Advent, but without the observance of a fast.

This is truly a great thread, and I am deeply annoyed with myself that I've come back to it so seldom.  But this thread is certainly a very good lesson, and I pray that all are having a blessed Advent.  Today I read in Magnificat Advent Companion that the practice of praying the seven O... Antiphons from 12/17-23 traces back to the 7th century in Europe.  It seems a striking complexity that the first letters in Latin from each of the seven antiphons in Divine Office Evening Prayer spell ero cras in reverse order, which translates, I will be with you tomorrow.

The First Reading for the Fourth Sunday of Advent is taken from the Prophecy of Micah Chapter 5 Verse 1-4.

At one stage there were five Advent Sundays until Pope Gregory VII (Pontiff from 1075 to 1088) reduced the number to four.

During Advent the Gloria (Glory to God) is omitted during Mass.

Practices associated with Advent include praying an Advent daily devotional.
This would include one reading passage for the day and a prayer related to the Scripture lesson might be included.

The Advent season is a good time to pray the Angelus at family meals.

The Power of Hope, a quote from my Advent Companion: "...to be Christian is to be full of hope."
"...in hope we were saved.  Now hope that sees for itself is not hope.  For who hopes for what one sees?  But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance."
Romans 8.24-5

The Christmas Anticipation Prayer is also known as the St. Andrew Christmas Novena.
It is traditionally recited fifteen times per day, beginning on the feast day of St. Andrew,
which is November 30, and ending on Christmas Eve.

Information on John the Baptist
The Gospel According to Saint Matthew Chapter 3 Verse 3
