Saint Alcuin of York (735-804) was educated in the cathedral school of York, and became a monk
and teacher there. At the court of Charlemagne, Alcuin wrote several theological and dogmatic
treatises. He was made Abbot of Tours in 796.

Alcuin was also called Ealhwine or Flaccus. He had many manuscripts copied using beautiful calligraphy.

St. Alcuin, pray for us!
What a fine thing it would be to see some of his works!

Alcuin was not a priest. How could Charlemagne install him as the abbot of the monastery of St. Martin at Tours?

Saint Alcuin wrote many theological and dogmatic treatises, as well as a few grammatical works and a number of poems.

Delaney's Dictionary says Charlemagne asked Alcuin to set up a school at the court in Aachen in 781, and it became one of the greatest European educational centers.

Alcuin of York's ascendancy to the headship of the York school began after Aelbert became Archbishop of York in 767.

In his
Life
of St. Willibrord, Alcuin writes that Wilgils, called a
paterfamilias,
had founded an oratory and church at the mouth of the Humber.
