Selby Abbey was the first monastery to be founded in the North of England after the Norman Conquest.
The Abbey was granted its charter by William the Conqueror (King William I).

A tragic loss during the suppression of the monasteries, when that great thief, adulterer and heretic Henry VIII stole all the Catholic religious properties in England to feed his worldly desires and cast all the monks out with no place to lay their head.

On May 31, 1256 Selby Abbey was bestowed with the grant of a Mitre by Pope Alexander V
and from this date was a Mitred Abbey.
