In 1025 Hildebrand was born in Tuscany, Italy. He went to France where he embraced the monastic state in the Abbey of Cluny.
He helped to carry out the reforms of Pope Leo IX. He succeeded Leo in 1073.
Hildebrand took the name of Gregory VII.

Gregory VII issued the Dictatus Papae in 1073.
This proclaimed the supremacy of the pope and avowed the pope inherited the personal sanctity of St. Peter.

After the demise of his father Gregory built six monasteries in Sicily.
He founded a seventh in his own home in Rome, which became the Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew.
