Wilfrid was born in Northumberland in 634.
He was educated at Lindisfarne and then spent some time in Lyons and Rome.
Returning to England, he was elected Abbot of Rippon in 658. He introduced the
Roman rules and practices in opposition to the Celtic ways of Northern England.

In 664 Wilfrid acted as spokesman for the Roman position at the Synod of Whitby.
He advocated that the Roman method for calculating the date of Easter should be adopted.
His success prompted Alhfrith, the future King of Deira, to appoint him Bishop of Northumbria.

Wilfrid chose to be consecrated in Gaul because of the lack of what he considered to be validly consecrated bishops in England at the time.

After Wilfrid was restored as the Bishop of Northumbria, he discharged his episcopal duties.
He founded monasteries, built churches, and improved the liturgy.
