Nicholas was born approximately in 820. He was the son of a Roman official, the Defensor Theodore.
Nicholas received excellent education. He entered the service of the Church at an early age.

Pope Sergius II (844-877) made Nicholas a subdeacon and Pope Leo IV (847-855) a deacon.

Pope Nicholas I asserted that the pope should have suzerainty over all Christians, even royalty, in matters of faith and morals.

Judith, daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Bald, married Count Baldwin I of Flanders without
her father's consent. Pope Nicholas urged leniency in order to protect freedom of marriage.

Pope Nicholas encouraged the mission activity of the Church.
He sanctioned the union of the sees of Bremen and Hamburg.
