Christmas is a contraction of "Christ's Mass", which is derived from the Old English Cristes maesse.

The Gospel passages proclaimed at the Vigil and the Midnight Mass of Christmas root the Nativity of the Lord in the family history and lineage of David as they tell the story of the Birth of the Savior.

How wonderful that God chose the shepherds to see the important birth of the Infant Jesus! Because of their humble origins, the shepherds could not help but rejoice and tell everyone that they had seen the Messiah.

The Christmas tree is an evergreen tree to remind people of God's everlasting love. The star which is traditionally placed on top of the tree symbolizes the star of Bethlehem.

Christmas Time runs from First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of the Nativity of the Lord up to and including the Sunday after Epiphany or after January 6.
