The tradition of three different Masses for Christmas dates back at least to the 6th century.   
The three Christmas Masses (midnight, dawn, and during the day) originated in Rome around the year 330.

There does not have to be a Midnight Mass. There is no mandated Mass at midnight.

Midnight Mass is unique because it symbolizes the transition from darkness to light,     
mirroring the nativity story when Christ was born in the quiet of the night.

The Gospel for the Mass at Dawn on Christmas morning is taken from Luke's Gospel   
with the shepherds' visit to the Infant Jesus.

The Christmas Mass of the Day is celebrated in the fullness of daylight, signifying that the promised   
Son of God has now been revealed to the whole world.   
The Gospel reading is a call for all people and nations to worship the newborn King of Kings.

The word "Christmas" is derived from the Middle English word Cristemasse, 
which comes from the Old English Cristes Maesse, a phrase which means   
"Christ's Mass" and was first recorded in 1038.
