Saint Didacus of Alcala

Didacus of Alcala was born about 1400 at San Nicolas in Andalusia.     
He entered the Third Order of St. Francis when he had scarcely reached young manhood.

Saint Didacus volunteered for the missions in the Canary Islands and labored there energetically and profitably.     
He was also the superior of a friary there.

On the island of Lanzarote, Didacus was assigned to the post of porter.   
In a monastery, the porter is the monk appointed to be the one who interacts with the public.

John Delaney's Dictionary of Saints says Didacus was noted for his healing power and miracles, but gives no details.

In 1445 Didacus was appointed as Guardian of the Franciscan community on the island of Fuerteventura.

A Guardian is one who looks out for the friar.   
A Guardian animates the friars to live the Gospel in the manner that St. Francis lived it.

In 1450 Didacus was recalled to Spain. From Spain he went to Rome to     
 share in the Jubilee Year proclaimed by Pope Nicholas V.
