Saint Anskar (Ansgar) (801-865) was the son of a noble Frankish family near Amiens.     
After his mother's early demise, he was brought up in Corbie Abbey, and was educated at the Benedictine monastery in Picardy.

In 822 Anskar became one of many missionaries sent to found the abbey of Corvey in Westphalia, where he became a teacher and preacher.

In 829, after the Swedish king Bjorn at Hague requested missionaries for his Swedes, King Louis   
sent Anskar. Anskar preached and made converts.

In 831 Anskar returned to King Louis' court at Worms and was appointed to the Archbishopric of Hamburg-Bremen.

Anskar was consecrated as a bishop in November 831, with the approval of Pope Gregory IV.
