The first known stylite was Simeon Stylites the Elder. He climbed a pillar in Syria in 423 and lived there for 37 years.

Daniel the Stylite (c. 409-493) lived on a pillar for 33 years after being blessed by and receiving the cowl of St. Simon the Stylite.

Alypius the Stylite built a church in honor of the great martyr Euphemia on the site of a dilapidated pagan temple.
He erected a pillar beside the church and lived atop it for the majority of his adult life.
