Charles was born on October 2, 1538 at the castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore near Milan, Italy.   
His father Gilbert Borromeo was the Count of Arona.   
His mother Margaret, Countess of Arona was a member of the House of Medici.

Charles received the tonsure when he was about twelve years old.     
Tonsure is the practice of cutting or shaving some or all of the hair on the scalp as a sign of religious devotion or humility.

Charles Borromeo attended the University of Pavia, where he applied himself to the study of civil and canon law.

On December 6, 1559 Charles earned a doctorate in canon and civil law.
